Never give up or Aeroflot Chess Open 2013

Just right away after the Turkish National Chess Championship  I flew to Moscow to participate in the Aeroflot Chess Open 2013 which had a different format this year. It wasn’t a classic event anymore, organizers turned it into the blitz and rapid chess festival! The prize fund of both events went to 150 000 USD which is rare for chess events nowadays :) The system of the rapid chess tournament was quite funny : first two days we had an open tournament from which top 32 players were qualifying for the further playoff.

As the qualifying open had no prizes at all, nobody cared about the final standings in it, the most important was to be IN top-32! The score +4 was making it sure so after players got +4, they started signing quick draws, some of them even in 3 moves! While I was looking at them jealous as I had +3 most of the tournament :)

In the 7th round I got a great chance to enter the group of leaders with +4. I had White pieces against GM Vadim Zvjaginstev (2658) and managed to obtain a clearly winning position out of the opening. Houdini was showing +5 after the 16th move :

I was keeping the evaluation from 1,50 to 2,50 till the move 45th and then my opponent blundered heavily but I hadn’t realized that having seconds on my clock : Читать далее

Turkish National Chess Championship 2013

A few days after the Tata Steel Chess Tournament, I got to play another tournament — the Turkish National Chess Championship which took place in a touristic region, Kemer (Antalya). We played in a wonderful 5-star hotel «Limra» so chess players had all conditions to show their best over the chess board. 318 players came to play which made tournament very intensive one. Would like to point out one fact : there were 80 online boards, clearly the record for national chess competitions!:)

However I scored 9/11 (+7=4), still it wasn’t enough to go on sharing the first place! GM Dragan Solak was in a great form which let him to score 9,5/11 and take the clear first. I managed to share second-third with GM Baris Esen who hadn’t lost any game too. The 4th place went to GM Emre Can who had shown a great fighting spirit but unfair pairings in the last round didn’t let him to enter TOP-3, however he truly deserved it with his play!

Impressions from Wijk aan Zee

I’m back home after spending almost 3 weeks in Wijk aan Zee. The Tata Steel Chess Tournament has turned a new page in my career, no doubt about that. However, I lost quite a lot of a rating but still I’m feeling happy that I’ve got an opportunity to play next to the best chess players of the world! I lost 6, won 1 game  and others finished in draw. In majority of the games I lost, I was too optimistic and was overestimating my positions though going for complications which were on the favor of my opponents usually….
